Unit 13 Vocabulary

Students will be given the Unit 13 vocabulary words and pages to complete. Some of the assignments will be done in class and others are expected to be completed as homework. The students will hand in all assignments and be tested over the Unit 13 vocabulary words on Friday, May 6th. Please be prepared.

Romeo and Juliet

We will be starting to read Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The play will take 3 weeks to read due to the block testing schedule for AIR. Students will be expected to complete a study guide (with my assistance) upon discussion of each scene and act of the play. Once we have finished the reading, the students will be assigned a group and will complete a project involving the character and plot of the play.

NOTE: A large portion of the final exam will cover Romeo and Juliet material.

Grammar Lessons - Direct Objects

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on direct objects on Friday, April 8th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Position Essay

We will writing a position essay based on the student's choice in topic. Research must be done and prewriting must be established with organization of the essay before developing the rough draft. We will be working on this in class and around the AIR testing schedule over the course of the next several weeks.

UPDATE: Position Essay is due: 1st, 3rd and 7th  - Thursday, April 14th and 2nd - Tuesday, April 19th.

Non Fiction Reading

We will continue preparing for the upcoming AIR tests which are scheduled to be given in April. To do so, we will be reading a series of nonfiction articles from New York Times and be discussing strategies to use before reading the text, while reading the text and after reading the text.

Grammar Lessons - Predicate Nominatives

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on predicate nominatives on Friday, March 4th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Poetry Unit

Students will be working on a poetry unit working with poetry literary terms. They will complete an acrostic poem, a partner scavenger hunt using several poems to find and describe literary terms used in the poems and they will also complete a group project poetically analyzing a chosen song as a form of poetry using literary terms.

Students will be given the Unit 11 vocabulary words and pages to complete. Some of the assignments will be done in class and others are expected to be completed as homework. Grammar Lessons - Subject/Verb

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on subjects and verbs on Friday, February 19th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Character Analysis

We will be writing a character analysis using a character from To Kill a Mockingbird. We will be developing an outline, rough draft and final copy of this analysis in class. The due date for the character analysis is Tuesday, March 1st.

Character Body Map

We will be creating a body map with quotes, symbols and textual evidence to analyze a character from To Kill a Mockingbird. Students will work on this in class and will have my assist in developing this character analysis as a form of prewriting for a written and formal character analysis we will be writing the following week. The due date for the body map is Friday, February 12th.

To Kill a Mockingbird Test

Students are finishing the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, completed the study guide with class discussion and taking small reading quizzes periodically. The novel test will be given on Tuesday, February 2nd and the study guide will be handed in that day, as well.
